Russiz Superiore Horus 6/375 2005

90% Picolit, 5% Friulano and 5% Sauvignon Blanc - What a delightful dessert wine without too much sweetness and ample ripe acids to balance it seamlessly! Floral orange blossom opens it up with a complimenting liqueur subtlety and herbal nuance that really rounds it out. Welcoming and heady scented, this is bright and buoyant with a mangosteen fruit to the palate and a lovely presence that is rich without weight and bright without sharp edges. A peachy orchard nuance rises on the finish with an herbal high note akin to chartreuse scents that makes the eyes cross as they roll back into ones head in ecstasy. This is a winsome and blissfully sweet glass but this comes as no surprise hailing from the Collio hills of limestone and clay in northeastern Italy where it rises east toward Slovenia. At high altitudes the alpen breezes combine with the those off the sea to gently ripen these varieties until they are picked by hand in late October when they are laid in the cellar to dry over another 3 to 5 weeks losing 30% of their water weight and thereby concentrating every drop. The wine ferments in oak casks and then rests on its lees for 36 months and one year in bottle before release, marrying all the scents and flavors into a complete whole. This is one of Italy's greatest dessert wines and belongs on everyone's wish list.

Horus (a fabulous blend of 90% Picolit with smaller percentages of Sauvignon and Friulano) opens with a golden-amber color and segues to aromas of honey toasted almond, dried apricot, chestnut honey and yellow rose. The wine is thick and creamy with a long close that is driven by both extraction and freshness. –Monica Larner
