An awful lot of mediocre wine is produced on the broad, warm lowlands of Languedoc-Roussillon. But as the land rises toward the Grand Mastif in the north-northwest and the Pyrenees in the south-southwest you find very interesting wines. Minervois, Corbieres and Saint-Chinian in the north; Maury and Banyuls in the south. If you love urchins, spiny or Dickensian, Picpoul de Pinet is a must.
