The central ‘belt’ of Italy contains the regions we most associate with this historic and impossibly beautiful country: Tuscany, Umbria, and Abruzzo.
On the Mediterranean side, Tuscany gives us the bounty of Chianti along with the vegetable, fruit, fish, and meat culture they are so famous for. Add to that Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Brunello di Montalcino and you have simply one of the top wine regions on the planet.
Umbria is slowly being discovered by American tourists as a sort of ‘quiet Tuscany’ without the hoopla and tour buses (but still with incredible hilltop towns, Roman ruins, and stunningly good food).
On the Adriatic side, Abruzzo is a hiker’s paradise, with more national park land than any other region of Italy. It’s also home to some of the greatest wines of the country, made from the Montepulciano grape.
