Drouhin Rully Blanc 2011

An overlooked wine, to tell you the truth. Rully flies under the radar of most wine drinkers, which is a shame for them but a gift for us in the know for the affordability factor is significant. As the northernmost region in the Cote Chalonnaise (just south of, and connected to, the Cote d’Or), it has the particular exposures and soils needed for great wine especially in decent vintages. Characterized by zesty fruit and lively acids, Rully could in many ways be called the Frugal Man’s Puligny-Montrachet.

This vintage is striking in its play between ripe apples and lemon zest, bouncing around the mouth like a pinball in one of the first of the ‘new wave’ pinball machines of the mid 1980’s, when suddenly movies like Back To The Future and Cannonball Run all had to have their own quarter-eating presence in the corner of the local bar. Those new wave machines were well known for more lights, flashes, bumpers, and energy than old-school machines. The energy is frantic, and that’s what this wine reminded me of, in a good way. Ah, the days before Xbox and PlayStation.

Try this beauty with any type of seafood that has a citrus glaze involved … it will play well and enhance the nuance of the food in beautiful ways.
