Gaillard Saint-Joseph Rouge 2011

Pierre Gaillard 2011 Saint-Joseph | 12.5% | This may well be the most exemplary Saint-Joseph one could try for Pierre Gaillard achieves this round result from blending Syrah from each of his parcels on the southeasterly granitic slopes in the north of the appellation lending many parts to each bear their voice in this lovely chorus of Saint-Joseph. Telltale Gaillard means this is no mere Saint-Joseph but one of the highest order; when yields are low, traditionally vinified on its skins for breadth and depth, and then married over 18 months in fine grained French oak from the renowned forests of Nevers and Alliers. An elegant Syrah, this has ample fruit to be sure but a floral nuance and grace of stature –as if Princess Grace of Monaco were brunette instead of blond –where fine bones are framed in a svelte musculature capable of most anything but in a fashion that ensures that whatever is done is always in one effortless, fluid motion –these wines remind us of what grace these hills are capable.
