Hautes Noelles Gamay Rouge 2009

If you’ve never tried this wine you’re in for a treat. Have it as an aperitif on a warm day, with a first course of spicy shrimp or with a main course of chicken or meat salad. It’s super bright and perky with fresh raspberry and a little cherry notes. There’s plenty of acidity to let it dance all over the palate. This is northern France’s interpretation of the famous grape of Beaujolais and they’ve not taken it too seriously, but let it show its charms in much the same way that Rhone interprets rose or their other Loire neighbors put bubbles in their Cabernet Franc. Smile and enjoy – it is here for fun only!

This is an aside for us. It is from our Muscadet producer and we buy it depending on what Beaujolais is like in the vintage. Most people recognize gamay as Beaujolais. This is as it should be; it is here that the terroirs nudge the nuances out of the varietal. In Loire gamay is all grins and giggles; like a little niece or nephew wants to tell you a secret then gives you the raspberries right in your ear. Speaking of raspberries, that’s the lively flavour of this wine. A fun, terrific quaffer for the whole of summer. – Wine Review by LAC 5/10/2010
