Giesen Riesling 2011

From New Zealand’s iconic family winegrowers, Giesen Riesling grows in Marlborough for its cool, even ripening yielding a mouthwatering key lime, floral, juicy soft but citric acids that water at the mouth touch of fresh pear and gentle sweetness.

A blend of two vineyards, this Riesling bears the best from both: the lower Hawkesbury and the lower Waihopai. The Hawkesbury fruit is quickly harvested and fermented cool under aromatic yeasts as a whole while the Waihopai fruit was handpicked, and then small batch fermented separately; to then combine one fermented under wild yeast with another inoculated and fermented cool and with the last batch stopped whilst still sweet and thereby lower in alcohol.

Blended altogether, these achieve a beautiful balance uniquely Kiwi. While a touch sweeter than previous vintages, the 2011 still displays a lovely pure acidity which provides an edge to the palate and focus on the finish –what’s more is that this wine should develop well in the bottle over a few years.

Pork, ham, scallops. Salmon or tuna most anyway even tartare. Asian food. An excellent wine with food.
