Javillier Savigny-les-Beaune Les Grands Liards 2012

I was about to start this note with a comment as to the difficult vintage that 2012 was in the vineyards and, for the market, especially on the heels of 2011. But this note is my third for this wine, having tasted it in barrel, shortly after bottling and now here out of our warehouse; so my perspective on the ‘12s has broadened by tasting the 2013’s and today the news that Burgundy has been devastated by hail.

Javillier 2012 Les Grands Liards Savigny-les-Beaune | Sustainable | Savigny is a lovely little village in a picturesque valley north of Beaune. A land long loved for its reds, the wines of Savigny-les-Beane historically were described as “théologiques, nourrissants et morbifuges”; theological, nourishing and death-preventive. Sounds a bit like a sales pitch for snake oil and this may have been needed in days past. Today, as appreciation grows for lively, engaging wines like these no such hype is needed. The colour is more purple than the Les Serpentiers’ garnet; the nose seductively rich as Savigny goes and has a bit bacon. There is bacon and black fruits and crème frais in the mouth with a lively but fuller finish. Again, like many 2012’s; not classic but so, so enjoyable.

Food Pairings

Roasted birds are a preternatural match but Pinot Noir goes with any number of dishes ranging from those incorporating wild game and foraged mushrooms to veal stews or grilled fleshy fish. For a classic cheese pairing hunt down some Epoisse...
