Lagar de Condesa Albarino 2014

Albarino grown in Galicia's Valle do Salnes in the Green Spain of Rias Baixas in Spain's northwest, this has a great purity of fruit ranging through the whole spectrum of stone fruit from yellow plum and peach to the fresh apricot that dominates the fragrant palate. Lifted floral notes are grounded by a textural midpalate -perhaps from four months sur lie, perhaps from fermentation in large 600l oak foudres. Weighing in at 12% alcohol by volume and textural yet nimble, fruity yet mineral, it reminds me of the great Condrieu of yesteryear before syrupy viscosity overcame tension and elegance. These can still be found but in hot vintages of late this is a refreshing counterpoint.

Expert Review

91 Vinous
Light yellow-gold. Fresh lime, quince, jasmine and a hint of vanilla on the assertively perfumed nose. Dry and sharply focused, offering Meyer lemon and orchard fruit flavors that become deeper as the wine opens with air. Finishes very long, with impressive clarity and mineral cut and lingering notes of chalk and bitter quinine. Forty percent of this wine was fermented in large French oak casks. Drinking window: 2016 - 2019
