Li Veli Orion Primitivo 2010
This wine is from Apulia, otherwise known as the heel of Italy. It's incredibly hot down there, with the sun beating down ruthlessly and thus turning most grapes into raisins. But the grape Primitivo has adapted to the hot climate, and its thicker skin helps temper the grip of the sun. Medium bodied, with aromas of cherry coughdrop, toffee, coffee bean, and boysenberry. It's sassy in its fruit, dancing out of the glass more like a Beastie Boy than Fred Astaire. Taste is smooooooooooth, with all sorts of pronounced spice of the non-pepper variety (think of the aroma blast you get when you open your spice cabinet at home). A great, long finish makes this ideal for the likes of dry rubbed pork ribs, pulled pork shoulder, or even just a pile of bacon!
