The Terroir of Chianti (a primer with Badia a Coltibuono)

What goes into the making of a truly great Chianti?

As with any great wine of the world, it starts with location, planting the correct clonal material in the correct spot for maximum quality.

Then of course there are the farming systems being employed, and finding the balance between vigor and intensity in the vines.

And finally the touch of the winemaker, or lack thereof. Some Chiantis in the last ten years have evolved into a very “international” style, with loads of new oak, deep color extraction, and a dollop of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or even Syrah being added to the Sangiovese (official Chianti laws state that a Chianti must be a minimum 80% Sangiovese … the other 20% can be anything they want). On the opposite side of the spectrum are the traditionalists, who want to avoid winemaker influence at almost any cost.

One is not better than the other, simply different. But regardless of the winemaking style employed, we have the utmost respect for any producer that concentrates on making great wine in the vineyard first and foremost, and that is where this video series comes in.

Before we get into some cool lessons from Roberto Stucchi of Badia a Coltibuono, let’s define what a ‘truly great Chianti’ is. One of the more beautiful and accurate descriptions have come from Jackson Rhorbaugh in a great article for Wine Folly:

The best examples of Chianti are a visceral tasting experience. Imagine the smells as you walk through an Italian grocery store: at the entrance there’s a bowl of preserved sour Amarena cherries. You walk under bunches of dried oregano, past a wall of dark, aromatic balsamic vinegar, then pass a counter where dry salami is being sliced. At the bar, dark espresso is dripping into a ceramic tazzo. A whisper of sweet tobacco wafts in the door from the pipe of the old man outside. Chianti smells and tastes like Italy. There will be a little coarseness and tartness on the palate, but these aren’t flaws, they are classic characteristics of Sangiovese.

Spot on. And that brings us to Roberto Stucchi and Badia a Coltibuono.

Regarding intelligent and wholistic approaches to grape growing and winemaking, Stucchi is one of the leaders in the field, especially when it comes to the sub-zones of Chianti. His wines are hands-off, expressing all the good and true aromas and flavor profiles of the region.

Listening to Stucchi discuss vine growing practices is eye opening and incredibly educational.

First, a discussion of the sub zone of Giaole in Chianti, in the southeastern corner of the zone, where Badia a Coltibuono is located. Included is a fascinating talk on the “mother vineyard” where he has isolated the clones he wants to work with, and all plant material for other vineyard plantings comes from this site. (My apologies for my thumb being in the video for a bit.)

Next up, a full discussion on organic farming practices, use of cover crops, and the large number of Sangiovese clones used by Badia a Cotibuono and why. (Again, my big thumb gets in the way for just a bit, sorry about that!)

Going deeper, figuratively and literally, Stucchi discusses soil science and “reading the weeds” to identify problems and imbalances in the vineyard.

Continuing on the soil discussion, here talking about micro organisms and life content in the dirt.

Welcome FAILLA to The Wine Company!

We are proud to announce that The Wine Company is the new Minnesota distributor for the amazing wines of Failla, one of the shining stars of the “cool” (literally and figuratively) California wine movement.

The winery was founded in 1998 by Ehren Jordan and Anne-Marie Failla, coming out of a wine education that included stints at restaurants, retailers, and various wineries in various capacities, both in California and abroad. Though he’s never taken a single winemaking class in a school, Ehren put in his time while absorbing knowledge at Joseph Phelps, Jean-Luc Columbo, and many more. Most notably, he was the head winemaker at Turley Wine Cellars for many years, where he earned a worldwide reputation.

Ehren Jordan

Ehren Jordan. Photo from Terroirist.com

When it came time to open their own winery, Jordan and Failla sought out the cool climate, difficult to farm vineyards of coastal california at a time when those vineyards were not getting the kind of love and attention they garner today.

Wines of elegance, restraint, and a respect for European ideals are always a pleasure to come across. We’ve never been big on the bold around here at The Wine Company, often seeing pairing wines with foods to be a far better barometer for a judgement of quality as opposed to, say, flammability. All kidding aside, it’s wonderful to be able to represent wines such as Failla, which represent a new thinking of the old-school variety in California.

Eheren Jordan was San Francisco Chronicle’s Winemaker of the Year in 2008. This article has GREAT INFO regarding who he his and how he thinks.

A fine profile piece from Terroirist.com on Ehren Jordan.

From Wine Enthusiast, a good article on the new(er) Fort Ross-Seaview AVA and many of the wineries located or sourcing from there (including Failla).

And lastly this article, which mentions the Failla labels are designed by Chuck House, who got his start when a motorcycle riding punk named John Williams pulled into a 7-11 and asked the kid at the counter, who was doodling in his notebook, to design a label for a place called Frog’s Leap, as we wrote about in our blog.

Wil Bailey’s Three Favorite Rosés of 2015

Every now and again we like to corner our Portfolio Manger, Wil Bailey, and ask him to list his favorite wines in a given category. Rosé in August is a particular favorite to inquire about, for late in the summer he’s been able to taste the evolution of the rosé wines and compare them to when he first picked them out.

Take it away, Wil!

I was talking to a friend yesterday about a report we heard on the radio confirming that not only does it “feel” to most of us like this is the best summer weather we can remember but that the empirical data back it up – THIS IS the best summer ever!

I told him I didn’t actually need to hear the weather data confirmed. I already knew it was the best summer yet simply because of the amount of Rose we have been going through at our house. We simply can’t keep up.

Having dinner – there goes a bottle of Rose, having friends over – there go a couple more, heading out to someone else’s house – bring a bottle of Rose, heading out to the boat or the cabin – there go a couple more. Honestly, it’s been kinda crazy in an entirely enjoyable kind of way.

So, in the spirit of the BEST SUMMER EVER I thought I might point out a few of my favorite wines of this season.

Sierra Cantabria, Rioja Rose, 2014

SierraCantabriaRose2014

This is the first time we’ve bought this wine, and boy are we happy we did. It’s a bit of an anomaly in the Rose world as it’s a blend of red and white grapes (most Rose’s are red grapes held on the skins for only a few hours to pick up a little color before pressing). This wine is 50% Viura (white grape), 30% Garnacha (Grenache to the English speaking world), and 20% Tempranillo which is the king of red grapes in Spain and the core of almost all Red Riojas. As you might expect with the 50% white wine base this wine is a very fresh style, with an appealingly perky acidity matched by a smooth red fruit quality. It’s a surprisingly complex Rose, and one of my happiest surprises of the season.

Looking for Sierra Cantabria Rosé? See the list at the end of the post!

Guigal, Cotes du Rhone Rose, 2014

GuigalCDRRose2014

Guigal is one of my favorite producers in the world, but honestly I’m not usually that wild about their Rose. LOVE the Cotes du Rhone Rouge, and the quality only goes up from there, but the Rose often leaves me a little flat. Then along came this 2014 vintage. This is a LOT of wine for the money. It’s got tons of character, depth and stuffing, but don’t be confused that this is a heavy wine. It’s a fresh and tasty Rose through and through, perfect for whatever you are doing with your grill and/on your porch. It’s just that it also holds your attention for a while as you are enjoying each tasty sip. Apparently we are not the only ones who have noticed how good this vintage is, as the Wine Advocate recently gave it a 90pt rating which is all but unheard of for a wine which is “simply pink”.

Looking for Guigal Rosé? See the list at the end of the post!

Hofer, Zweigelt Rose, 2014

HoferZweigeltRose2014

Cards on the table, this is my hands down favorite Rose of the year! Speaking of not being able to keep up… This is also one of my favorite wineries in the world just because the Hofer family is just so unbelievably genuine, kind, and welcoming. Did I mention they also farm their grapes organically? Lots of good karma here! This wine is so juicy, and bright, and fresh, and full of strawberry goodness I find myself opening and sharing bottles every chance I have (this is why I can’t keep up). At their best like the Hofer I think Rose’s should be joyous and joyful expressions of the summer season, free of clutter and confusion, something you can bask in a little bit almost like the sunshine itself. I’m sure this reads as a little over the top and ridiculous, but you should try a bottle. Hofer – take me away…

Looking for Hofer Zweigelt Rosé? See the list below!

Do you know Jurançon?

Here at The Wine Company we are always on the lookout for the wonderfully odd, be it a region or grapes.

Why? Because it makes for fun conversations, a way to connect with the intrinsically curious, and most of all to support the smaller winemakers of these obscure but historically important regions.

A favorite amongst the staff is the region of Jurançon of far southwestern France with their native grapes Gros Manseng, Petite Manseng, and Camaralet de Lasseube.

Located in the foothills of the Pyrenees, south of Bordeaux (about 2/3 of the way to the Spanish border), Jurançon is little known but is a destination to seek out on your next trip to France. Lush forests, dramatic scenery, and a wine culture focused on pride in their native grapes makes for a wonderful experience. Being removed from the traditional tourism paths, there remains an untouched and pure culture around every turn, especially regarding their wines.

Southwest France wine map from WineFolly.com

Southwest France wine map from WineFolly.com. You can see Jurançon in green at the bottom, third from the left.

The main grape of the region is Gros Manseng, which translates directly to “Large Manseng” in reference to the size of the berries. The juice that flows from these grapes is grey and honeyed in color, rather than the clear white-edged juice of most grapes (including red grapes — for the color is located in the pigment of the skins), resulting in a surprisingly rich look for such a young white wine (this fools many people … the color can come across initially looking like an old Chardonnay). Don’t be fooled! The wine that results from Gros Manseng, assuming it was harvested at the right moment and produced by a talented winemaker, is packed full of flowers-meet-stonefruit aromas. Typical descriptors are apricot, quince paste, and peaches along with lilac, minerals, and talc. On the palate it can be relatively aggressive, making it an ideal match with fois gras. This is not your average forgettable white wine!

Two other grapes of the region are Petite Manseng and Camaralet de Lasseube.

Petite Manseng, as the name implies, is a smaller berry and it also produces the highest overall quality of any of the Southwestern French grapes. However, it is not planted en masse because of its low yielding nature (whereas Gros Manseng is a powerhouse of production). Some wine bloggers are sensing Petite Manseng might follow the same path to cult-like popularity that Viognier is now enjoying.

The Camaralet de Lasseube grape is very rare (referenced by Jancis Robinson in her book Wine Grapes as “endangered”), due to the fact that it only produces female flowers, produces incredibly low yields, and is prone to oxidation. However, when used in a wine it brings forth a tremendous wave of pepper and spice, along with a lower alcohol to help temper the sometimes aggressive nature of Gros Manseng. Our little Cahuape Jurançon Sec, listed below, is actually composed 40% of Camaralet de Lasseube with the balance being Gros Manseng.

Our two Jurançon selections and where to find them

CAUHAPE 2013 JURANCON SEC SOUTHWEST FRANCE

Biodynamic | Between Biarritz and Lourdes, facing the Pyrenees in heart of Bearn, Henri Ramonteu creates dry and sweet white wines from an exceptional terroir, the land of Domaine Cauhapé. The wines of Jurançon with their fruity, complex aroma and elegant golden color, will assuredly enchant lovers of fine, signature wines. Situated in the southwest corner of France, the Jurancon region produces exceptional dry and sweet white wines.

Along the clay slopes that define the province of Béarn in France’s Southwest, Jurançon faces the Pyrenees dressed in vines. Here 60% Gros Manseng contributes finesse and fruit and 40% of the ancient local Camaralet revived by Cauhapé brings fragrance and mouthfeel to blend into exceptional dry Jurançon with fragrant white pepper and citrus a la ruby grapefruit with a juicy herby note akin to sorrel but without any hard edges pulling fast punches or pith to bring down the fragrant heights soaring atop the palate. Instead this is a picture of equipoise: a smooth yet crisp, fruity yet dry Jurançon – bright but polished, engaging and crowd pleasing –for neophyte and Sommelier alike but certainly for foodies as this is poised and ready to pounce on les fruits de mer of prawns and shellfish, on foie gras or fattened roast chicken… the list goes on and on…

JOLYS 2012 JURANCON SEC SOUTHWEST FRANCE

Sustainable | At Château Jolys the Famille Latrille crafts their dry (sec) Jurançon Sec from 60% Petit Manseng and 40% Gros Manseng planted to the 80 acres of superb, sandy-clay slopes of Chapelle de Rousse in the heart of the Jurançon appellation where this south-southwesterly amphitheater faces the Pyrenees and the arc or the ripening sun. Hand harvested early October, this dry Jurançon fully expresses the freshness and aromatic intensity of its two grapes, iconic varieties of the Jurançon appellation. Exuberant and intensely aromatic, this refreshing, crisp white wine reveals citrus notes both floral and fruity: honeysuckle, jasmine, grapefruit, citrus. The mouth is rich with a fresh attack and true vivacity that comes to support a very expressive fruity mid-palate and a fleshy finish.. Pair with fish, shellfish and seafood, semi-hard cheese or simply enjoy by itself as an aperitif.

Three great wines for grilled fare

We love our grilled food at The Wine Company, especially during a nice summer evening on our company patio playing a little bocce ball and listening to great music. What to drink with grilled food is a topic that comes up every summer, and this year we have three great suggestions.

A great wine for grilled fare should have firm acidity (to keep the palate fresh), good body (to not be overwhelmed by the meat and spices), and a balance that compliments the food rather than competing with it (we’ve found, much to some winery’s dismay, that big, alcoholic, oaky, full bodied wines simply don’t dance well with most grilled fare).

Which takes us to these three beautiful wines. You can find the wines at the locations listed at the end of this post (it’s auto-updated as new stores order the wines, but always call ahead for availability).

We’ll let portfolio director Wil Bailey take it from here:

 Madone Beaujolais le Perreon

Domaine Madone, Beaujolais “Le Perreon” 2013 – It’s hard to imagine that anyone’s “top wine for grilled food” could retail for under $18, but therein is the idiosyncracy AND KILLER VALUE present in Beaujolais today if you dig around the region for a while. Olivier Berard’s family has been making wine around the village of Perreon for over 400 years. In fact since Perreon is Olivier’s mother’s maiden name it’s unclear whether this wine is an homage to the local terroir or to his ever patient mother (I’m betting he told his mom it was for her…). In any event while the appellation here is “basic” Beaujolais the terroir, style and quality is all Cru Beaujolais. Granite, limestone and clay based vineyards combined with Burgundian winemaking techniques (no carbonic maceration here) result in a heck of a tasty wine at a totally “try me” kind of price.

Gaudets Morgon

Domaine Gaudets, Morgon “Cote du Py” 2011 – Here is another “you will not believe the value of available in Beaujolais right now” wine. The slope of the “Cote du Py” is pretty universally regarded not only as the greatest vineyard site in the Cru appellation of Morgon but probably the top vineyard site in all of Beaujolais. If Beaujolais had a “Grand Cru” (they don’t) Cote du Py would be it.  5th generation family winemaking, hand-picked, whole cluster, small lot, punch down “Burgundian style” vinification make the Gaudets “Cote du Py” an almost ridiculously tasty and classy wine. As a bonus, 2011 is an outstanding vintage in Beaujolais. On a personal level, I am looking forward both to drinking a lot of this wine in the next couple of years as well as putting some into the cellar to see how it evolves over the next 5-7.

 Courtois Vinsobres

Domaine Courtois, Vinsobres “St Pierre” 2011 – The Domaine des Courtois “La Source” Cotes du Rhone is one of my favorite Cotes du Rhone in our book because it is a lighter, fresher more delicate take on this appellation. As the heart of the Jaume family estate is in the cooler, higher altitude, northerly district of Vinsobres they have a great focus on Syrah based wines from this most Northerly of the Southern Rhone appellations. We’ve held off buying this wine for a number of years, but when they showed us the 2011 we just couldn’t resist bringing it in. 50% Syrah, 40% Grenache, 10% Mourvedre this wine has a great, high-toned spicy and satisfying barrel aged quality. It’s a ton of wine for the money from an awfully nice family.

Welcome Melville, and understanding Santa Barbara wine country

We are proud to announce a wonderful addition to our California portfolio, welcoming the wines of Melville of the Sta. Rita Hills of Santa Barbara County.

Adding a winery to our portfolio is not something we do casually. It has to fit a niche for us, in terms of style, price, reputation, availability, etc. Most importantly, however, the wine has to be delicious, and on that question Melville hits a grand slam.

Santa Barbara wine country, and the Sta Rita Hills in particular, is a place misunderstood by many. So before we get into the deliciousness of Melville, let’s do a little geography lesson.

When you look at the coastal wine regions of California, from north to south you go from Sonoma to Santa Cruz to Monterey to Paso Robles to, finally, Santa Barbara. It’s logical to think that the further south you go, the hotter it should get. But that is not entirely true and it’s definitely not that simple.

The irony is that parts of Santa Barbara (and the Sta Rita Hills in particular) are some of the coolest temperature wine growing regions in the state of California. Why is this? It’s because the weather patterns that bring cool air and fog to San Francisco are the same patterns that spin down the coast all the way to the Santa Barbara region.

Important to note: When we talk about the Santa Barbara wine region it’s a completely different place than the city of Santa Barbara.

The coast of the city of Santa Barbara, looking east. To the north, the Santa Ynez mountain range separates the temperate climate of the south from the rugged, cold, wine country climate to the north.

The coast of the city of Santa Barbara, looking east. The Santa Ynez mountain range separates the temperate climate of the south from the rugged, cold, wine country climate to the north.

As the map below shows, Santa Barbara the city is facing due south, and is on the southern side of the mountain range. The Santa Barbara wine region is to the north, on the other side of the Santa Ynez Mountains.

Map from sbcountywines.com

Map from sbcountywines.com

The weather systems that hit the city of Santa Barbara are the same that affect Los Angeles and Baja Mexico (in other words, temperate sun all year long). However, once you go around Point Conception, everything changes. The water temperature drops. The fog rolls in. The waves are bigger. A chill is in the air. Just as in the Russian River Valley, cold air over the ocean gets sucked over the vineyards on a nightly basis, but the air here is even colder than San Francisco.

Which brings us to the Sta. Rita Hills* and Melville winery. If there is a particular point of weather extremes, it’s this region located between Lompoc and Buellton. Need proof? On a summer afternoon start in the city of Santa Ynez, where the temperature might be close to 100 degrees (which explains the plantings of Syrah and Grenache in this area), and start driving west. For every mile you drive, the temperature will drop by one degree. Over the course of a 40 mile drive, you’ll go from 100 degrees to 60, or 80 down to 40!

Smack in the north-central part of the Sta. Rita Hills sits the Melville estate, perfectly positioned to take advantage of this diurnal temperature swing.

* Regarding the name “Sta. Rita Hills”: when the AVA was first formed, it was called “Santa Rita Hills” but the Santa Rita winery in Chile didn’t like that. Thinking it would confuse consumers, they forced a change in the appellation name. Hence it’s still called “Santa Rita Hills” but the correct way to print the name is “Sta. Rita Hills.”

Here’s what you should know about Melville. What sets them apart.

The Melville family are farmers. Their history in the wine world started in the Knight’s Valley of Sonoma, where Ron Melville planted his first vines and quickly developed a reputation as one of the best at what he does. However, a love of Burgundy brought them to cooler climates and eventually to a patch of land east of Lompoc in the Sta. Rita Hills to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

“We are growers. We are not winemakers. That’s why our partnership with Greg Brewer is so important,” says Ron’s son Chad Melville. “We know how to work the land and bring Greg the best grapes. Greg knows how to coax the expression of land from those grapes. We work perfectly together.”

This balance and respect between farmers and winemakers is assumed throughout the wine world, but rarely do a pair dance together as beautifully as the Melville family and Greg Brewer.

Greg Brewer is a fascinating fellow. Originally a French language instructor, he approaches winemaking from angles and directions that show his distinctive mindset. For instance, no new oak is used in the Melville wines. Where does that woody tannin come from? The stems. By harvesting a portion of the vineyard late, when the stem wood is dried, and adding the whole cluster to the tank the natural release of tannins happen. “The meat is sweetest closer to the bone” is what Brewer is fond of saying.

As told by Los Angeles times in a great profile:

Brewer likes to compare the collection of wines that go into the estate wine blend to an orchestra. He calls the bright, high-toned wines picked earlier in the six-week harvest and wines from sandy soils the piccolos, while richer, more curvaceous Pinots picked later or from primarily clay soils play the part of the violin or maybe the cello sections.

Some winemakers taste through every barrel, make sample blends and then put their final blend together. Brewer’s strategy at Melville is a little different.

“We essentially craft the blend over a six-week period during the harvest,” he told me. “At the start, we’ll be picking early-season fruit that’s lighter, brighter and with a higher acidity.” That’s his piccolos. As the harvest progresses, he says, “different blocks and clones and soils and picking parameters offer grapes with more weight and more bass notes.”

What results in the top quality fruit grown by the Melville family combined with the winemaking detail of Greg Brewer are wines of incredible distinction and amazingly high quality. Every person we pour them for is impressed.

The (second) Top 100 Award

We’ve been honored yet again to be recognized as one of the Top 100 Best Companies to Work For by Minnesota Business Magazine.

We couldn’t be more honored!

Yes, popping bottles of wine at the end of the day is part of it. Yes, gathering for outstanding meals is part of it. But a larger aspect is the evolution of a culture, and culture can’t be pre-planned and mapped out on a blueprint. It’s the personalities of all that are involved that make it happen. A collective whole.

A company that works well together elevates everybody’s performance to achieve more than they thought possible as individuals. The goal is to have a blast while doing it. That’s what it’s all about.

It’s this collective whole that we love and embrace at The Wine Company.

Minnesota Business Magazine was kind enough to send out a videographer to capture our office in action. Take a look at their great video, which won the first prize in the video contest during the awards ceremony!

In Support of Pinot Meunier (and welcome Moussé Fils to Minnesota!)

It’s never fun to be the third wheel. To sit at a dinner table and be the one that feels like you don’t know as much as the vivacious and outgoing people surrounding you. To be the one picked last to join the kickball team. To be the one that answers the question “so what do you do?” with “Well, I make these two over here look good, I guess…”

Pinot Meunier is often characterized as the ‘lesser’ grape of Champagne, while Chardonnay and Pinot Noir get all the attention as the varieties that give us the complexity and detail we seek. At worst, Pinot Meunier is characterized as a ‘filler’ grape implying that when you don’t have enough Chardonnay and Pinot Noir you just pump in some of this wine in just to make the bottle not look empty, like insulation foam.

How silly.

As you can guess, the truth is far more interesting.

Some neat Meunier facts you might not know
1. Meunier is French for “Miller” as in a flour miller. Imagine the clothes of a flour miller, dusty white on a regular basis. If you’re in a vineyard of Meunier and walk up to a vine and turn a leaf over you’ll see white hairs on the leaf, looking like a dusting of flour. This naming of the variety was first mentioned in the late 1600’s, when the grape was being planted throughout the Champagne region and prized for its easy ripening and high acid levels.

2. In the vineyard Meunier is much more flexible than Pinot Noir. Able to withstand cooler temperatures and even frost, it’s ideally suited for north facing vineyards especially in more moisture-heavy and cooler microclimates.

Pinot_Meunier3. It has a genetic quirk that stunts its growth (specifically through not responding to gibberellic acid, which is a growth hormone), and thus most Meunier vines are shorter than others.

4. It’s an early budding variety but also early ripening … ideal for the unpredictable weather region of Champagne come harvest time.

Since it’s claim to fame is as a blending grape, rarely do we get to taste a 100% Pinot Meunier, especially of a non-sparkling variety. More and more Meunier is being planted in areas such as California, Oregon, and Australia (where it used to be known as “Miller’s Burgundy”), but the best country to source a pure (non-sparkling) Meunier form might be Germany. There, under the name Schwarzriesling, over 5800 acres are planted.

But we have another way to enjoy Pinot Meunier: the new to Minnesota amazing Champagnes of Moussé Fils.

Mousseé Fils is located in the Vallée de la Marne, the great western swath reaching out from Epernay, where most of the plantings are of this little underdog Meunier. With only 5.5ha of land (which makes a whopping 4100 cases for the whole world) they need to choose their grapes and blends carefully.

MOUSSE-NB

Young Champagne superstar Cédric Moussé

Like many a great micro-producer, the name on the bottle also belongs to the winemaker and owner, a young gent named Cédric Moussé. However, this is not what we call a “Grower-Producer” for young Cédric actually buys grapes from his neighbor, on land that Cédric is paid to farm. Through this handy arrangement, he’s in full control of his fruit but doesn’t have the tax implications of ownership. Call him a Micro-Negociant. (We’ll be seeing more of this arrangement in the future.)

His wines are driven by Pinot Meunier … all of the best aspects of the variety: the plump and round fruit along with firm acidity; along with none of the bad aspects: extreme earthiness or imbalanced fruit to acid mouthfeel.Moussé Fils Noirs

These wines are lustful. They are a sultry voice in a crowded room. They speak to a variety, a place, and a personal vision of the winemaker. It reinforces why we seek wines like this.

Moussé Fils Brut Millesime
95% Pinot Meunier. “The wine is solid and sophisticated, the firm face of Meunier. I’d accept it as I tasted it, it’s so balanced and suave, and minutes long on the finish.” – Terry Theise.

Moussé Fils Brut Noire Reserve
An assemblage of two previous cuveés, put together to bring the best of multiple fermentations together. “The extra time on the cork has made it an awfully tasty wine.” – TT.
91 points Steven Tanzer: “(85% pinot meunier and 15% pinot noir, 60% from 2009 and the rest from 2008 and 2007; disgorged in March, 2013 after four years on its lees): Light yellow. Spicy tangerine and anise aromas are complemented by hints of sweet butter and toasted hazelnut. Juicy citrus fruit flavors offer impressive clarity and energy, picking up a minerally character with air. Youthfully taut and well-balanced brut with very good finishing lift and thrust.”

Moussé Fils Rose Tradition
92 points Wine Advocate: “A very pretty and exotic wine, the NV Brut Rose Tradition is impossible not to love. Sweet floral and herbal notes meld into expressive red fruit in this delineated, nuanced, totally captivating Rose. Mousse crafts their Rose from 92% Pinot Meunier and 8% still Pinot, an unusual combination. This release is based on the 2009 vintage, which explains the wine’s radiant, totally inviting personality. All the elements are simply in the right place in this gorgeous, compelling Rose. Disgorgement date: June 12, 2012. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2017.”

Moussé Fils Brut Special Club
The only member of the Special Club to make a 100% Pinot Meunier wine, this is a spectacular tête de cuvee that every Champagne lover should seek out. “… the sample I tasted was disgorged before my eyes, still on the lees. It tasted firm and generous and salty; solid and (positively) earthy. A wine that stands at attention. Again, tasted without dosage, and a very small amount is planned.” – TT
